Catherine Joan
Nelson
Feb 12, 1934 — May 15, 2020
Catherine Joan (Schultz) Nelson was born in Richland, Iowa February 12, 1934 to Warner and Catherine Schultz. I believe she said that she was the 723rd friendly person in that little town and the only child of Warner and Catherine. The family moved to Oregon during the war and then to Schenectady, NY in the late 1940s where she went to high school, studied at Bryant College in Secretarial Science and then went on to Skidmore College in Saratoga, NY where she sang and graduated with a BS in Home Economics in 1958. She married John Sherwood(since deceased) in December 1956 and they had two daughters, Johanna and Diana. Caty, as she has been known since she came to Virginia in 1980, began work in the Dept. of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech where she continued doing kind and excellent work for 13 years. On June 24, 1985 she was transformed by the love and power of God and has been a faithful follower and witness for Jesus since. On November 23, 1987 she became the sweet wife of James Nelson. In January of 1994 Caty and Jim left Virginia to study at Kentucky Mountain Bible College. It was there she earned her Associate of Arts degree in Religion in 1996 and continued on as the Dean of Women and eventually Registrar until she stepped down to coordinate the Coffee House, tutor and relax a little. She leaves behind her ever-loving blue eyed husband, Jim; her two daughters, Johanna Rae Jones and Diana Elaine Sherwood; son-in-law Delbert Jones; cousin, Jim(Pat) Guernsey of Florida. Also a host of wonderful friends too numerous to mention. She loved music and in addition to singing beautifully, played the violin and more lately the guitar until arthritis in her fingers prevented her from pressing the strings down hard enough. She also delighted in domestic animals from birds to cats to dogs, didn't like malls but enjoyed back road traveling and interesting places to see and unusual places to eat.
